Natural Pest Control Tips

In my opinion there is no need to use toxic chemicals to control pests such as ants, flies, or cockroaches.  Let me tell you, the cockroaches down here in Florida are large enough to be listed with the post office to receive their own mail.  Eeekkk!  To keep these unwanted visitors from setting up a resident in my home, I do everything I can to make my home an un-appealing destination for them to live.  If a few creatures do make it into our home, natural homemade deterrents and traps will quickly make them want to leave.  It puts my mind at ease that our at home pest control is natural and doesn't danger myself, my family, our kitty Midnight or the environment.

Here are a few ways in which I control those unwanted pests.

Planted Herbs to Keep Ants Away

I plant lavender and peppermint around our house to keep the ants away.  I place them in ground and in pots around doorways, and I place small pots of mint in window sills.

Natural Ant Powder
Dried peppermint, cayenne, and borax help to deter ants.
¼ Cup of Dried Peppermint
¼ Cup of Powdered Cayenne
¼ Cup of Borax
Mix the ingredients together; and sprinkle the powder around the area where ants are entering.

Essential Oil Cockroach Repellent
Cockroaches don’t like the scent of eucalyptus or rosemary essential oils.  I place a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball and place it in an area where I have seen a pesky roach.

Homemade Fly Paper
It is super easy to create your own fly paper by spreading molasses onto strips of bright yellow poster board.  Punch a hole at the top and hang the strips with string wherever the flies are a nuisance.

In effort to control bugs on a daily basis here are few things that I do.  I cut off their food source by cleaning up dishes immediately after meals.  Everyday I wipe down my kitchen counters for crumbs, often more than once.  I wash out all of the bottles, jars, and cans that I place in my recycling bins.  I try very hard to eliminate hiding places, getting rid of unneeded paper, bags, and cardboard boxes.

I hope that you found this natural pest control tips helpful.

Quick Facial Sauna

Steaming is absolutely a part of your regular skincare regimen.  Professional estheticians and frequent spa goers understand its benefits of a steam facial.  I love to save money so I skip the bill, and do your own 10 minute at home three times a month.  The steam draws toxins out of pores, and softens the skin.

How it works!  The steam gently heats up the delicate facial skin causing you to sweat, the pores to open up,  and the impurities are flushed out through the open pores.

Are you looking for a quick and easy steam facial?  Here it is a easy herbal tea facial sauna recipe to try at home.

DIY Quick Facial Sauna

Pour four cups of boiling water over one tea bag each of chamomile and peppermint in a large heatproof bowl.  Let is steep uncovered for about two minutes, then make a towel tent over your head and the bowl.  Stay under the towel for 10 minutes capture all of the wonderful steam.

Steaming works for all skin types but if you suffer from severe acne or Rosacea, do NOT steam. The heat exposure will irritate your skin.

GO ahead and pampering yourself with a steam facial, sure you have the time.

Honey, Honey, Honey

Everything you might not know about honey . . . and more!

Honey is one of nature’s purest ingredients, the sticky goodness is the result of hard many working honeybees.

Honey changes it’s texture and appearance over time, and is sensitive to its environment.  Amazingly some batches of honey appear to be thousands of years old and do not go bad.

Bees have been producing honey for at least 150 million years.

Did you know that honey bees must visit approximately two million flowers to make one pound of honey.  They are extremely hard working bees.

Honey has antiseptic powers, and assists in creating a protective barrier on burns or cuts.  It helps in the skin’s natural processes of healing itself and fighting off infection.

Our Honey Bee & Oatmeal Soap has super softening powers thanks the honey, which is blended into each fresh batch of soap.  Our Almond Body Scrub Cubes contains honey, adding to its effective scrubbing powers.  We at Natural Garden Soaps add honey to many of our natural skin care products.  Honey is a wonderful ingredient because it is a great moisturizer, and adds a rich texture to our products.

Depending on the source of the nectar, the honey produced can range in color, texture, scent and taste. Every batch of honey is different, thanks to differences in weather and flowers used for production from season to season.

Honeybees are only dangerous when they are defending their colony, when they are buzzing about in the garden they are perfectly harmless.

Once bees settle into a new spot, it can take only 72 hours for them to begin producing honey. They are the ultimate team workers!

Have allergies? Take a teaspoon a day of a honey made from the region where you live, and it will aid in developing resistance to pollen.  Therefore reducing your seasonal allergies.

I love to contribute to community efforts, and I purchase honey harvested locally.

I appreciate all of the hard working honey bees producing honey out there in the world.  Honey is one of nature’s finest gifts, and a remarkable, sticky and truly amazing God given substance.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is one of the most gentle, and useful essential oils, with a soft  floral and herbal scent.  It is gentle enough to be used directly full strength on the skin and it is suitable for all skin types.  Its aroma is known for its relaxing, calming effects to the central nervous system.  Lavender also has an amazing ability to heal, balance, and tone all skin types.

Lavender Essential Oil Uses:

If I am feeling nervous, I take several deep inhalations of lavender essential oil directly from the bottle to calm my nervous anxiety.

I like to keep lavender essential oil inside of my first aide kit to use to relieve sunburns, insect bites, cuts, blemishes and to induce sleep.

I combine dried ground lavender buds with powdered oatmeal, add water to make a paste.  I use this wonderful mixture as a calming facial cleanser.

To deter bugs naturally, I sprinkle dried lavender into file boxes with paper documents, or behind shelved books.

I like to dab lavender essential on my little ones feet just before bedtime for a calming effect and peaceful sleep.

I place a few drops of lavender oil on a cloth, then toss it in the dryer with our laundry.  It adds a wonderful scent which naturally deodorizes and freshens our clothes.

Do you have any favorite uses for lavender essential oil?
